This monthly meeting will offer information, support and encouragement to newly diagnosed patients, survivors, family members and friends in a friendly non-threatening forum. Survivors can discuss their situations, experiences, coping strategies and hopes. Educational presentations are also part of the SPOHNC program.

SPOHNC (Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer), a patient-directed not-for-profit organization founded in 1991, addresses the broad emotional, physical and humanistic needs of oral and head and neck cancer patients.

The basic objectives of the program are;

> To provide encouragement, support, acceptance and self expression.

> To provide resources in the areas of survivorship information, survivor networks and individual strategies.

> To create a safe, friendly and non-threatening forum for survivors to discuss their situations, experiences, strengths and hopes.

> To provide a support source for health care professionals to use for the purposes of improving the total health care and quality of life of their patients.

> To provide informational and educational programs addressing issues of concern to oral and head and neck cancer patients and their families.

> To increase patient awareness of many issues related to oral and head and neck cancer through the publication of a newsletter.

> To encourage and promote increased scientific and clinical research and development in the improvement of quality of life for oral and head and neck cancer patients.
